PM Laptop Initiative Highlights Rising Role of Women in Higher Education

The Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme has emerged as a major contributor to digital learning in Pakistan, with female students accounting for more than half of all beneficiaries. According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26, women represented 54 percent of participants in the program, reflecting a growing presence of female students in higher education and technology-driven learning.

The scheme has distributed thousands of laptops to students enrolled in public sector universities and higher education institutions across the country. Beneficiaries belong to Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, ensuring broad national coverage.

Education experts view the strong female participation rate as an encouraging sign for Pakistan’s academic sector. Despite progress in recent years, a noticeable literacy gap still exists between men and women. Increased access to laptops and digital resources is helping more female students participate in online learning, research activities, and skill development programs.

The initiative is also supporting the government’s broader vision of promoting a digital economy. Access to personal computing devices enables students to improve their technical abilities, complete academic projects, and prepare for careers in emerging fields such as information technology, artificial intelligence, data science, and digital marketing.

Officials believe the scheme has played an important role in reducing barriers to education, particularly for students who previously lacked access to modern technology. Universities have also reported increased engagement in online courses and digital learning platforms among recipients.

However, education specialists stress that laptop distribution should be complemented by improved internet connectivity, stronger educational infrastructure, and greater investment in digital skills training. Many students in remote and underserved areas still face challenges accessing reliable internet services, limiting the full benefits of digital education.

The latest figures nevertheless highlight a positive trend. The growing participation of female students demonstrates how targeted educational programs can expand opportunities and encourage greater inclusion in higher education. As Pakistan continues its digital transformation journey, initiatives that promote technology access among young people are expected to remain an important part of the country’s education strategy.
