Punjab Plans Major Expansion of Free MDCAT Coaching Centers for Students

The Punjab government is moving ahead with plans to strengthen its free MDCAT preparation initiative by increasing access for students preparing for medical and dental college entry tests. The focus is to make quality coaching more accessible for candidates from both urban and rural areas.

Under the proposed expansion, the government is considering setting up six new MDCAT preparation centers in government colleges across major divisional headquarters. These centers aim to reduce the financial burden on students who cannot afford private academies.

The proposal has been submitted by the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) Colleges to the Higher Education Department for final approval. Officials say the additional centers will complement the existing network already operating across the province.

Last year, around 54 MDCAT preparation centers were functional in Punjab, providing free coaching, practice sessions, and academic guidance to thousands of students preparing for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT).

Each center requires an estimated budget of approximately Rs100,000, covering teaching support, study materials, and operational arrangements. The government believes the investment has significantly improved access to competitive exam preparation.

Education officials highlighted that demand for free MDCAT coaching has increased every year due to rising competition in medical admissions. Many students rely on these programs as their primary source of preparation.

If approved, the new centers are expected to be established in a phased manner, ensuring proper staffing and resource allocation. Authorities are also considering adding digital learning support, mock tests, and online practice modules to improve performance outcomes.

Students and parents have largely welcomed the expansion plan, saying it will help level the playing field for aspirants from low-income backgrounds. Officials believe the initiative will further strengthen medical education opportunities across Punjab.
