HEC Suspends Computing Program Admissions at 44 Universities Across Pakistan

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has temporarily suspended admissions to computing-related degree programs at 44 universities and higher education institutions across Pakistan as part of its ongoing quality assurance review.

According to an official advisory, the decision has been taken under the National Skill Competency Test (NSCT) framework to ensure that computing programs meet required academic, technical, and professional standards. The suspension applies only to fresh admissions and will remain in place until the review process is completed.

HEC has advised students and parents to carefully verify the status of computing programs before submitting admission applications. The commission emphasized that institutions under review will not be allowed to enroll new students in the affected programs until they receive the necessary approvals from the competent authority.

The review covers universities located in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Several public and private institutions are included in the evaluation process.

Officials say the move is aimed at improving the quality of education in rapidly growing fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Technology, and Cyber Security. The commission wants to ensure that universities have qualified faculty, modern laboratories, updated curricula, and adequate learning resources before admitting new students.

The temporary suspension does not affect students who are already enrolled in these programs. Current students can continue their studies according to existing academic schedules. The restriction only applies to new admissions until the assessment process is completed.

Education experts believe the review could strengthen confidence in Pakistan’s higher education sector by ensuring that graduates possess the skills demanded by the local and international technology industry. HEC has stated that institutions meeting the required standards will be allowed to resume admissions after receiving formal approval.
