The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has approved an increase of 475 MBBS seats in Punjab’s government medical colleges, providing a major opportunity for students seeking admission to public-sector medical institutions.
With the latest approval, the number of MBBS seats in Punjab’s government medical colleges has increased from 3,476 to 3,951. The total seats available in public medical and dental colleges across the province have also risen to 4,241, offering more admission opportunities for eligible candidates.

The expansion follows a request from the Punjab Health Department, which had urged the PMDC to approve the additional seats before the start of the new academic session. The provincial government maintained that increasing capacity was essential to accommodate the growing number of MDCAT-qualified students every year.
Officials said the proposal had been under review by the PMDC Council before receiving final approval. Following the decision, government medical colleges across Punjab will admit students against the revised seat allocation during the upcoming admission cycle.
The increase is expected to reduce competition for admissions, although MDCAT merit and the official admission policy will continue to determine seat allocation. Students will still be required to meet the eligibility criteria announced by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) and the Punjab Health Department.
Education experts believe the additional seats will strengthen medical education in Punjab and help produce more qualified doctors to meet the province’s growing healthcare needs. However, they also stress that infrastructure, faculty, teaching hospitals, and clinical training facilities should continue to expand in step with student intake to maintain educational standards.
Prospective candidates are advised to regularly check official announcements from the PMDC, University of Health Sciences (UHS), and the Punjab Health Department for the latest admission schedule, merit lists, and seat distribution details.
